Tailgating Accessories – Sunglasses That Say Style and Team Pride
September 6, 2019
With the beginning of tailgating season finally arriving, I know many of us are so excited to get outside and take in all of the festivities. Everything from the sights of RVs and trucks lining the parking lot, the smells of grills working away at firing up some delicious food, to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. Tailgating truly is one of the great experiences that brings us all together. With all that being said, you wouldn’t be tailgating properly if you didn’t bring along a little team pride. And a great way to show some style would be a pair of team-themed sunglasses. Yes, these tailgating accessories are one of my must-haves, especially for those mid-morning to late afternoon tailgates where the sun is high in the sky. I’ve put together a list of some great options for sunglasses and accessories for you to consider purchasing, so lets get started!

NFL Oakley Holbrook Sunglasses
I’ve always liked Oakley as a brand and for their product. Their quality and build ensure that their sunglasses will last you for years and years. Sure, they can be expensive, but in my experience they’ve been worth the investment. Over the past 10+ years I’ve purchased a couple pairs of sunglasses that I still use to this date and one set of snowboarding googles and they’ve held up through all the outdoor activities I’ve partaken in. Activities like softball, boating, snowboarding, camping, running, yard work, and of course tailgating. What I really like about the Oakley Holbrook is its design. It’s very simple, straightforward, and reminds me the of the style that was popular back in the 1950s, an iconic throwback look that is expressly American in design.
What’s unique about these particular glasses is that they are branded with your favorite NFL team. These special-edition Holbrooks are officially licensed by the NFL and are a great way to show off some team pride. The ever popular Oakley ‘O’ will bear the team’s colors and accents throughout the frame, and a little logo is etched on the lower right-hand side of the lens. Speaking of which, these Holbrooks feature Prizm lenses. These provide unprecedented control of light transmission which helps to maximize contrast and enhance visibility. Some other great features include:
Lightweight O Matter frame with Square O metal icon and front rivet accents
UV protection that filters out 100% of UVA/UVB/UVC rays
6-base lens geometry
Patented HDO (High Definition Optics) that provides clarity and razor-sharp vision
Three-Point Fit keeps the lenses in optical alignment at all times while eliminating any pressure points
If the Oakley Holbrook isn’t what you’re looking for then consider the Flak 2.0. I currently own a pair of sunglasses in the Flak style (Flack Jacket) and they’ve held up extremely well for almost 10 years. What I like about the Flak 2.0 are the lens sizes as they provide increased coverage for your eyes to protect against the elements. I will say that with the pair I own, it took a little bit of time for the glasses to fit my head well, almost like a breaking in period. But once I got past that, they fit like a glove. Plus, I’ve never had any issues with them falling off and they feel very comfortable when wearing for them for hours at a time.
Much like the Holbrook, these are branded with your favorite NFL team, featuring their logo etched on the lens and team colors integrated throughout. Prizm lenses are included as well as some other great features like:
Patented High Definition Optics (HDO) that provides clarity and razor-sharp vision
O-Matter stress-resistant frame material which is optimal for comfort and protection
UV protection that filters out 100% of UVA/UVB/UVC rays
Three-Point Fit that keeps lenses in optical alignment while eliminating uncomfortable pressure points
Unobtanium earsocks and nosepads to help keep your sunglasses on your face
The key to keeping your sunglasses functional for years and years is to take care of them. An easy and convenient way to do that is by purchasing a hard case and/or microfiber bag. The hard case is extremely sturdy, lightweight, zipper closure, and small enough to store in your glove compartment. It comes fashioned with your team’s name front and center on the case. The microfiber bag helps to keep your glasses from getting smudged, scratched, and dirty. Its even great for cleaning your lens in those inevitable times where you do manage to get something on your lens. There is a drawstring that’s used for closing and also features your team’s logo. They come in a variety of NFL and NCAA teams, so you’re sure to show off your fandom wherever you go. All-in-all, a small investment in a hard case and microfiber bag will help ensure that your sunglasses will be protected while they aren’t in use and will last you for years and years.
If you are looking for a basic, stripped down pair of sunglasses that still allows you to show off your team pride, there are plenty of offerings for you to look at. I usually keep a handful of these types of sunglasses around as well. They’re sometimes a little more practical and I’m not as concerned if I accidentally get a couple drops of food, sweat, or beer on my lens. What I like about these are that you have a few different frame options to choose from, relatively inexpensive to purchase a few sets, and there’s a wide range of teams to pick from. Where the Oakley sunglasses mentioned earlier are only available for teams in the NFL, these other options feature teams in the NCAA, MLB, NHL, and NBA. There are even team accessories like a shades holder that can match your sunglasses, now that’s the ultimate pairing!
So there you have it! There are all sorts of sunglasses out there to fit your needs and budget. I find that they are one of the most important items to have with me when I’m out tailgating. And if you’re going to be sporting some shades, they might as well be representing your team’s colors! I want to hear from you, what do you look for in a pair of sunglasses? Are you loyal to a particular brand? Do you even care about advanced lens technology? Feel free to sound off in the comments below.
