5 Ways To Embrace The Tailgating Lifestyle While Staying At Home
April 7, 2020
There’s no doubt that the Coronavirus is at the top of literally everyone’s mind these days. And while it’s important to be informed and up-to-date with what’s going on in the world, for a lot of us it can be overwhelming. Oftentimes, for many folks, when things get too hectic we look for some kind of escape. One of the most common escapes in this country is sports. They play a pivotal role in many different ways of being able to provide a much needed distraction and to unplug for a while. But even now, with everything going on, many of us can’t even rely on our favorite method of escape as virtually anything to do with live sporting events is cancelled. Never fear though, when push comes to shove there are people out there who are making the best with the situation they are given. I’ve seen stories and videos of fans who are keeping the sporting spirit alive in a multitude of ways. Instead of feeling down, they are choosing to embrace the sporting and tailgating lifestyle even while they are staying at home. Seeing this inspired me to put together some ways you too can keep your sprits up by using sports as the happy escape its been for you in the past. So check out our list below!

One thing that has helped me keep some sense of sanity has been some BBQ-therapy. Now that the snow has finally started to melt and the temperatures are creeping back up to ‘somewhat nice’, it’s been a blast getting to reconnect with my grills again. And I know I’m not the only one who feels this way. Recently, there was a successful online social media push to have a virtual BBQ where professional pit masters and amateur cooks could all come together and share their love of BBQ. This day was dubbed National Stay In and Cook Out day and was spearheaded by PK Grills using the hashtag #StayInCookOut.
Of course I had to participate, so I cooked up some Ribeye steaks and home made Bacon! You can see the day’s cook on our Instagram account. I’m excited to see this event expand in the future. If you’re longing for the days of BBQ’ing in the tailgate lot, get outside and grill! And as an added reward, treat yourself to some new team-centered BBQ gear. Or if you’re in the market for a new grill for tailgating or your home, check out our tailgating grill guide and our propane grill guide. And if you’re not able to make it to your local butcher shop, services like Crowd Cow have you covered with delivering all sorts of high quality fresh meat to your front door.
With many Coronavirus mandates requiring people to stay at home and bars/restaurants closing up, people are getting creative with ways to stay social. Thus, the creation of the virtual happy hour has now taken the country by storm. People are using this time as a much needed break from the day-to-day routine of self isolation and the constant news cycle. The prevalence of social media and video conferencing apps are allowing family, friends, co-workers, and even complete strangers to keep in contact with each other over their drink of choice.
I’ve done a few of these with family and friends recently and its been great to take the familiar concept of happy hour and adapting it in this way. It’s one of the few ways to help connect yourself to something we’ve maybe taken for granted in the past. So if you miss getting together with your tailgating group, set up a virtual cocktail hour! If you plan on taking part in one of these, you may as well represent your favorite team while you’re at it 🙂
If there was ever a silver lining to be found in having to be at home all the time, for me its been the ability to wear sweatpants all week long. Gone are the days of needing to abide by a certain dress code to go to the office, for now. While it’s been great to work and lounge in comfort all day, every day, I’ve seen the need to stock up on a few more pairs of sweatpants to keep in the rotation. To quote a friend of mine “I had to wear jeans today because all my sweatpants are dirty”. If you’re finding yourself in a similar predicament, it may be worthwhile to look at some new Athleisure and other team-specific wear.
Raise your hand if you fall under the category of needing to find things to keep your kids occupied? If so, Fanatics has some great options to help you out. It’s important during this period to keep young, idle minds engaged and not focused on a screen the entire day. Simple games like Connect Four, traditional puzzles that feature their favorite sports team, or the challenge of putting together a 3-D BRXLZ puzzle will keep them busy and provide an awesome work of art when they’re done!
Since I’ve been spending much more quality time at home lately, I’ve been thinking of ways to refresh the overall feel of my home and help fill the void of not having any sports to watch. I hadn’t realized this until now, but I didn’t know just how much sports was ingrained in my day-to-day life. Either watching on TV, reading about recent sports news, following my favorite teams on social media, or talking about game results with friends, sports had just become a norm for me.
So I’ve turned to watching replays, reliving moments by talking and sharing with others, and showcasing mementos of my favorite teams around the house. It certainly doesn’t replace the real deal, but it helps lighten the mood to brighten up your home surroundings. And besides, how cool would it be to replicate aspects of your tailgating set up right at home?!
Thank you so much for stopping by today! In these times it’s important to find ways of keeping your spirits up and your positivity going. But I want to hear from you, what have you been doing to keep yourself busy? How has the lack of sporting events affected you? What have you missed the most about going to a game? Are you running out of sweatpants yet?! Let me know in those comments below!
